Would you rather be rich or healthy?

I have to side with Virgil on this one: the greatest wealth is health.

And, since I have nothing of value to add there, I’ve decided to hop back in time to take on one of the days I missed.

Day 3: What is the last movie you saw in theaters?

I don’t make it to the movie theaters very often. So expensive. You have to find parking. And deal with teenagers making out. And get there early or get stuck in the front. And who knows who’s been wiping their boogers on the bottom of your chair.

Hi, my name is Alyse and I am an 80-year-old woman.

Anyway. Last week I went to see The Avengers, because I needed a break from all the crying and moping that followed putting my dog down last Friday. A mindless summer blockbuster was just the thing.

In terms of brain shutoff capabilities, The Avengers delivers in style. I could watch Scarlett Johansen kick ass all day, any day, and my Ally McBeal-era crush on Robert Downey Jr. isn’t just resurrected—it’s reached whole new heights of glory. The movie is completely accessible to persons not fluent in comic book culture, and for an action movie, it is surprisingly light on the gore.

It’s just the thing a girl craves when the ritual of looking for her pup in all the usual places, and finding nothing but cold, empty couch cushions and still, silent floors, gets to be too damn much.

It might be time for me to head back to the theaters, parking and teenagers be damned.

Raising a money savvy Tween

Recently, I was looking at my child and realized, I may actually be doing something right.  I by no means claim to be a perfect parent.  I make PLENTY of mistakes and I freely admit to that.  We are too much alike not to butt heads, and boy oh boy, do we!

However, one thing that I do not compromise on is finances.  Since she was 6 years old, I’ve taken her to the bank to make deposits into her savings account.  I no longer go up to the counter with her, like I did when she first started.  I wait my turn with another teller.  She goes up to them and says, “I want to make a deposit into my savings account.” The first time she did that on her own, the teller looked around for an adult, lol.  I waved and let them know that it is her account, therefore her business.

With birthdays and holidays, come checks from family members.  If there is something that she really wants, she will save that money until she has enough.  I do also ask her to try and put some money away, but it tends to be change that I’ve left around, that she gets her hands on, to deposit.  I tell her only pennies and nickles, the rest are mine!

I think by showing your children from an early age that saving money is important, they will grow up to appreciate that value and understanding.  I know my child appreciates the things that she has bought on her own, because it would be wasting her money if something were to happen to it.  Looking at some of her things?  You would never know a child owns it.  It is in that great of condition.  Most likely better than my own items!

Do you teach your child the value of a dollar?  Do they save or does it burn a hole in their pocket?

#febphotoaday – Day 28 – money

This spare change jar has been with us for several moves. It sits unobtrusively on our bathroom counter, waiting for the day it will be picked through for quarters or dumped into a Coinstar machine.

Every time I dig through my car / purse / pockets for change for the meter, I promise myself I’ll remember to restock my silver supply when I’m back at home. And every time I forget.

Maybe taking a photo of it will be the turning point. Maybe I’ll create some breathing room in the neck of this jar and save myself from unearthing mysterious gum wrappers, receipts, and melted lipglosses that are so much easier to find beneath my carseats than a simple, shiny quarter.

Also: I finally used the Kelvin filter for this photo. Now the only one that I haven’t used yet is 1977. Maybe tomorrow is the day…
